Learn the Difference Between Goals and Dreams Today!

If we don’t have dreams, why are we here? Everyone has dreams; it’s figuring out how to accomplish them that’s the tricky part. For many of us, our dreams are how we picture our future, a cherished hope, ambition or aspiration. How do you want to spend your days and what do you want to spend more of your time doing? Do you want to work every day or do something else? If you are handling your finances correctly and in line with your goals and morals, every day can feel like the first day of vacation.

My dreams include having more time to volunteer, travel around the country to see more Bills away games (don’t judge me), starting my family and some kiddos, and going abroad to ski and sail in exotic places. Some of you might relate to all, some, or none of my dreams but without a plan and quantifiable goals, these dreams might just stay that way - dreams, not reality.

Goals are specific and achievable objectives, and to accomplish your dreams; you need goals to get you there. Having sufficient financial intelligence, keeping notes and revisiting your progress is critical to achieving most goals.  If your dream is a new car, your goals might be: Before the end of the month I will complete my research on the make, model, and features you believe would be fit your lifestyle. The following month I will begin a savings plan to work towards a down payment. Within six months I’ll pay off the remaining store credit cards that are hurting my credit because I am using more than half my available credit on them. By the end of 2018, I will have my new car!  If you follow the progress of the vehicle purchase process, you can see that the dream wasn’t that far off, given that you set reasonable goals and choose a car within your means.

The other important point is that the goals you set are S.M.A.RT. and this means they are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Result orients and Time-driven. Keep your goals focused on a specific outcome, with a trackable and measurable result, within your means and ability, focused on a specific result and can be tracked. The S.M.A.R.T. auto goal for the dream mentioned earlier is “I will have purchased a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek with a sunroof by December 2018 while also paying off my store charge cards to afford it.”

Remember, we all have dreams and they start in an abstract form. Developing clear goals and a path to attain our dreams is crucial. I find comfort and a sense of relief when I convert a dream to particular goals. Once you have the goals, you can plan and begin moving forward with it. Take a moment to jot down five dreams you have and think about what goals you should set to achieve each dream. I’ve also uploaded a helpful worksheet to the resource center on Thoughtful Plan website if you’d like to use the S.M.A.R.T. format to organize your thoughts. I hope you begin to realize more of your dreams as I have!
