"Surprising advice” Do you know why you want more money? Understanding why you feel the way you do about money is one of the most important things you need to grasp before you can build your wealth and reach your financial goals. Money for money’s sake is not really a goal, but knowing how you would use more money helps to define your goals.
We all have reasons for how we think about money. Do you want a larger home, newer vehicle, to travel more? Depending on your age, you might want to retire sooner than originally planned, perhaps because of a bad boss or friends who are retiring and you admire their flexibility.
My personal feeling towards money is that it is there to help me do the things I want in life and to be able to afford to pay others to do things I don't like to do. My plumber loves what he does, but I do not love what he does and vice-versa. The key to happiness is understanding what motivates you to spend and save and aligning it with what you're doing today. Once you align your motivation and day-to-day practices, you are on your way to a thoughtful plan!
Think about Kim and Terry Pegula. Their current motivation in life is helping others through their foundation and developing a community-based sports empire (and to hopefully win a Super Bowl or two). It could have been their goal all along as Terry admired the Bills when he worked in Orchard Park as an engineer years ago, but for some time, their goal was developing and expanding their oil and gas empire. Earning money in their business allowed them to use that money for other goals. I doubt they Billieved (yeah, I know how I spelled that word) they would own the greatest team in the history of sports someday, but it worked for them because they understood what money was to them and focused on what they were good at to get what they wanted later. Nobody likes to wait, but guess what? You must wait sometimes.
Write down what motivates you to build your personal wealth, put this list somewhere you can see it every day, and remind yourself why you're getting out of bed to trade your time for the mighty dollar. Begin to reflect on how closely your current actions match your motivations. We will work over time developing the financial skills necessary to help you reach those goals but for now, figure out YOUR MOTIVATION.
